NEW TALENT PLATFORM KVIFF TALENTS
The organizers of the Karlovy Vary IFF are expanding the festival’s portfolio of activities aimed at systematically supporting filmmakers with a new talent platform: KVIFF Talents. The objective of the year-around program is to identify talented filmmakers and to support the creation of creative audiovisual projects with international ambitions possessing a high level of originality.
As part of the program, the selected filmmakers will be provided financing for development, mentoring from experts and the chance to present their projects to potential producers, partners and investors at the festival in Karlovy Vary. The project’s pilot phase is open to submissions from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In the future, the project will be expanded to include all of Central and Eastern Europe.
„Promoting new talents has always been a central part of the festival’s activities. With KVIFF Talents, we are taking these activities to a new level. The program will be another important piece of the puzzle promoting greater originality, creative boldness, and international ambitions by filmmakers from our region,“ says KVIFF’s executive director Kryštof Mucha.
KVIFF WILL HOST WORKS-IN-PROGRESS OF ODESA FILM FESTIVAL
The Karlovy Vary festival will support Ukrainian filmmakers and the country’s film industry through a unique collaborative project with the Odesa International Film Festival (OIFF).
The unprecedented military assault on Ukraine has been accompanied by fundamental limitations to the country’s cultural life. The Karlovy Vary festival expresses its full support for
Ukrainian filmmakers and festival organizers, and will thus host the Works-in-Progress program of the 13th Odesa International Film Festival, which cannot be held there because of the war. In Karlovy Vary, the program will be known as OIFF WIP Selection.
THE JOKE BASED ON THE NOVEL BY MILAN KUNDERA GETS DIGITALLY RESTORED
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival continues its long-running tradition of premiering digitally restored versions of classic Czech films. This year, the festival will be showing another important example of the Czechoslovak New Wave, director Jaromil Jireš’s 1968 adaptation of Milan Kundera’s novel The Joke.
A masterful adaptation of a famous novel, The Joke is the darkly grotesque story of how, in an atmosphere of absolute intolerance, spying and denunciations, an innocent student prank can fundamentally ruin a life.
KARLOVY VARY TO HONOR BOLESLAV POLÍVKA
The KVIFF President’s Award for outstanding figures in Czech cinema will go to actor, playwright, screenwriter, and director Boleslav Polívka.
Bolek Polívka first came to audiences’ attention as a distinctive and inimitable theater actor and co-founder of Brno’s legendary Goose on a String theater. He has also left a distinctive mark on Czech cinema. His most remarkable roles include the portrayal of priest in Vladimír Michálek’s Forgotten Light (1996) and the part of Josef Cizek in the Oscar nominated film Divided We Fall (dir. Jan Hřebejk, 2000). Polívka has also been an important collaborator of director Věra Chytilová. Their collaboration began with Calamity (1981) and eventually expanded to include five films.
As an homage to Mr. Polívka, Karlovy Vary festival will screen the film Forgotten Light.
VISUAL DESIGN OF THE 56TH EDITION
The visuals for the 56th KVIFF were designed by Jonatan Kuna and Zuzana Lednická of Studio Najbrt, whose uninterrupted collaboration with KVIFF goes all the way back to 1995.
“This year’s festival poster is not only a black-and-white but also a color illustration and celebration of the things we experience together every year at the beginning of July along Karlovy Vary’s colonnade between the Thermal and Pupp hotels. You can find your own Wally – and many other figures associated with the festival’s history,” say the design’s authors.
PLAY IT AGAIN! AN EXHIBITION BY STUDIO NAJBRT
The Studio Najbrt exhibition looks back on the studio’s twenty-eight years of working for the
Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The many different visual styles of each festival
year will be presented through a selection of posters, printed materials, and other items
created every year for the festival. The work of Aleš Najbrt, Zuzana Lednická, Marek Pistora,
Jakub Spurný, and several other designers will be on display at the Karlovy Vary Gallery of
Art.
PEOPLE NEXT DOOR AT KVIFF FOR THE SIXTH TIME
For the sixth year in a row, the Karlovy Vary festival will include People Next Door, a section
of films featuring protagonists with physical, visual, or hearing disabilities. The section is
presented in collaboration with the Sirius Foundation, the official non-profit partner of the
56th KVIFF.
PATRON OF CHILDREN NAMED OFFICIAL NON-PROFIT PARTNER OF KVIFF
This year’s official non-profit partner of the Karlovy Vary festival will be the Patron of Children
project by the Sirius Foundation. Patron of Children is a unique project that presents online
stories of children in need of support. Anyone can choose a child they want to help and the
amount they wish to donate. The project’s overhead is completely covered by the foundation, meaning that every last crown you donate goes directly to the children.
