Sónar 2024 brings together pioneers of electronic music, micro scenes from around the world, experts in AI an innovators in digital and audiovisual culture.

The 31st edition of Sónar brings together dance music pioneers and hyperlocal microscenes, with a dose of radical aesthetics and groundbreaking staging. It’s also a celebration of the diversity of genres and subgenres that define the sound of electronic music in 2024: from ambient to drum’n’bass; from happy hardcore to post-punk; taking in black metal, deconstructed club, memecore, gabber, and hyperpop.

The lineup includes major artists like Air, Paul Kalkbrenner, Charlotte de Witte, Sevdaliza, Jessie Ware, Kaytranada, Laurent Garnier, Ben Böhmer, Vince Staples, Folamour, CASISDEAD, Adriatique, VTSS, Richie Hawtin, Olof Dreijer & Diva Cruz, Kerri Chandler, Floating Points, plus many more.

But Sónar 2024 goes beyond household names, with a diverse selection of international and Spanish acts. Live performances from Aïsha Devi, Marie Davidson, Soto Asa, Yerai Cortés, Judeline, Loraine James, Kabeaushé, Iceboy Violet & Nueen, pablopablo, Lee Gamble & Candela Capitán, Toya Delazy, and La Goony Chonga are joined by singular DJs like JASSS, Eliza Rose b2b Dan Shake b2b Sally C, DJ Gigola, Blck Mamba, horsegiirL, Verushka, and ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U; plus radical collectives including ASIANDOPEBOYS, BLEX, Club Cringe, and TORO

Sónar+D, the festival’s meeting of digital innovation and creativity – integrated into Sónar by Day – addresses the mass-adoption of Artificial Intelligence, examining how it’s shaping the present and future of the creative industries. Kicking off with an inaugural conference entitled ‚Generating Panic?’, the implications – dangers, opportunities, and questions – of the use of AI in the arts and creative industries will take centre stage. There’ll be further analysis throughout the weekend with a series of debates, forums, talks and performances, featuring artists Marta Verde and Nicole L’Huillier, researcher Sasha Costanza-Chock (presented by SEIDOR), legal expert Micaela Mantegna, plus representatives from creative agencies Superblue and Moment Factory, plus curators from TED, The Conference, OFFF, and A MAZE, and many others.

During Sónar Week, Barcelona once again transforms into the global capital of electronic music and digital culture. Alongside Sónar by Day, Sónar by Night, and Sónar+D; OFFSónar, THE CUBE, +RAIN Film Festival, and SonarMies bring over 350 different activities, and more than 150,000 attendees,  to the city. This year’s programme is made possible through various collaborations. Among them are AI & Music, powered by S+T+ARTS; the TIMES(The Independent Movement for the Electronic Scenes) project in collaboration with nine other European festivals; the +RAIN Film Festival dedicated to cinema made with AI, organised together with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra; THE CUBE in collaboration with Casa Batlló; a new immersive visual arts space dedicated to Catalan talent promoted by the Direcció General d’Innovació i Cultura Digital; and Project Area, the Sónar+D exhibition area supported by Fundació Banc Sabadell. Plus there’s a new collaboration at Sónar by Night, with an updated SonarLab x Printworks stage that brings the essence of the much-missed London venue to Spain for the first time.

Sónar by Night

  • At Sónar by Night, you’ll find pioneers old and new, from electronic music and beyond. Air will perform their acclaimed debut album ‘Moon Safari’ in full for the very first time. They’re joined by disco revivalist Jessie Ware, creative Californian rapper Vince Staples, and multi-talented artist and performer Kaytranada, who’s currently preparing brand-new music.
  • Techno and house, dance music’s most established genres, will be well represented across both nights. Expect emotional techno from Paul Kalkbrenner, Ben Böhmer, and Adriatique; pure power from Charlotte de Witte’s new show ‘Overdrive’; and Richie Hawtin’s brand-new concept show. House fans won’t want to miss Kerri Chandler’s ‘Reel-2-Reel’ live, during which the New Jersey legend mixes live on stage with reel-to-reel tapes for an unparalleled audiophile experience. There are also appearances from New York house royalty Danny Tenaglia and The Martinez Brothers.
  • New at Sónar by Night this year is the SonarLab x Printworks stage, which brings the audiovisual experience of the famed London club to Spain for the first time. Featuring a 10 x 6 metre vertical screen and a redesigned lighting rig, it’s where a carefully curated and forward-thinking lineup of artists – CASISDEAD, KI/KI live, JASSS, Eliza Rose b2b Dan Shake b2b Sally C, salute, DJ Flight & MC Chickaboo, and more – will appear across both nights of Sónar by Night.

SonarCar will once again host the movers and shakers from hyperlocal scenes around the world. From the Latin diaspora comes Tayhana’s itinerant party Club Latinx  and Cuban-American rapper La Goony Chonga, and from Barcelona and Madrid, respectively, Verushka of Me Siento Extraña and Antidoto Club’s Yosef. It’s also a showcase for a pair of collectives who bring radical performance aesthetics to the dancefloor: Barcelona’s BLEX and New York’s Club Cringe.

Sónar by day

  • Sónar by Day repeats last year’s formula, with international headliners soundtracking all three evenings under the new canopy at SonarVillage by Estrella Damm. This year, there’s a clear French touch to the lineup, with Folamour’s new AV show on Thursday, Laurent Garnier’s eagerly awaited return to the festival on Friday, and Kittin back-to-back David Vunk on Saturday.
  • Spanish electronic music’s embrace of pop, rap, and R&B is felt in live shows from rising local stars Judeline, ABHIR, AMORE, pablopablo, Bikôkô, and Dyce. They’re joined by a host of international artists with a reputation for electric live sets, including Kabeaushé, HorsegiirL, TOMMY CASH, and Toya Delazy. The full diversity of local and global club culture is celebrated across the Sónar by Day lineup, with Marie Davidson live, Skin On Skin, DJ Gigola, Blck Mamba, Akazie, Slim Soledad, Jehia, ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, and many more.
  • A touch of flamenco comes to Sónar with Yerai Cortés. The young guitarist presents his new show ‚Guitarra Coral‘, joined on stage by a choir of six ‘palmeras’ and surrounded by microphones and cables for a hypnotic collective ritual that pushes the boundaries of flamenco. Sónar, Little Spain (the audiovisual production company of Antón Álvarez, better known as C. Tangana) and Blur Films have also teamed up to present the video for „Sonar por Bulerías“ (from Yerai’s forthcoming album), which is released today.
  • As always at Sónar, expect experimentationmusical, scenographic, and performative – on every stage. Analogue hardware is the foundation for EMPTYSET’s abstract, rugged sound, as well as for Surgeon & Speedy J’s expansion of the classic techno blueprint. Loraine James, Natural Wonder Beauty Concept (DJ Python and Ana Roxanne), and Ela Minus craft intimate soundscapes live on stage, and there’s a Spanish exclusive performance of ‘Les Immortelles’, Aïsha Devi’s powerful new show with visionary stage designer Emanuel Biard

Elsewhere, dance takes centre stage in a series of hybrid performances: cult producer Lee Gamble with choreographer Candela Capitán (in a show co-produced with Unsound); choreographer and dancer Kianí del Valle (in a new show with Hamill Industries and Tayhana); drill and noise artist Blackhaine; and Gabber Eleganza’s ‚The Hakke Show‘, featuring high-speed hakke dancing at 180bpm and rising. And the grand finale takes place on Saturday with ‚PHYSIS‘, a radical 6-hour multidisciplinary performance by ASIANDOPEBOYS. Founder Tianzhao Chen will be joined by 17 different artists throughout the afternoon, from musicians to dancers and performers, including the aforementioned ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U.

The programme is rounded off with the debate forum ‚We Are the Music Makers‘ and a pair of ‚Tardes de Prompting’ sessions: one on Visual Arts hosted by Krea.ai and Boldtron and another on Music and Audio with Stability AI’s Josiah Taylor.
  • Sónar is part of TIMES (The Independent Movement for Electronic Scenes), a cooperative project that brings together 10 European festivals and an audiovisual partner to create and curate original shows that combine music and visual arts. In addition to the project’s shared programming of artists and original creations, TIMES aims to support, promote and enhance diversity and sustainability within the music sector.

Sónar and Casa Batlló present the world premiere of Music:Response, a new experimental audiovisual installation from The Chemical Brothers and Smith & Lyall.

Music:Response opens at THE CUBE, a collaboration between Casa Batlló and Sónar that brings together electronic music and digital art in a 360° audiovisual space in the iconic Gaudi building.

THE CUBE launches on 24 May with the world premiere of Music:Response, an experimental audiovisual installation by The Chemical Brothers and Smith & Lyall (creators of The Chemical Brothers‘ live visuals).

Music:Response brings a new dimension to the creative universe that has evolved from the collaboration between The Chemical Brothers and artists Smith & Lyall. It features an exclusive soundtrack of re-worked music with specially-commissioned 360º kaleidoscopic visuals.

Casa Batlló and Sónar, two of Barcelona’s leading cultural institutions, are teaming up to offer groundbreaking music and visual art experiences by internationally renowned artists with THE CUBE.

THE CUBE, a world-leading audiovisual space located in the basement of the iconic Gaudí building in Barcelona, kicks off on 24 May with the world premiere of Music:Response, a thrilling audiovisual installation featuring re-worked music by The Chemical Brothers, and kaleidoscopic visuals by Smith & Lyall.

With THE CUBE, Sónar and Casa Batlló offer a new narrative for audiovisual experiences, one that is built with pixels, high-end audio and input from leading artists, creators and engineers. More than a venue: it is a blank canvas for creativity that allows the participants to be transported into the heart of the music.

Gary Gautier, CEO of Casa Batlló, adds: „We have the perfect setting to make any artist’s universe shine. A world-leading audiovisual space where artists can intervene with total creative freedom. It’s the perfect canvas for any creator and, in it, The Chemical Brothers and Smith & Lyall have designed an audiovisual experience that will enchant more than just their fans“.

Visual arts and music come together in this collaboration that combines the musical curatorship of Sónar and the living museum of Casa Batlló, a monument that in recent years has reached a whole new audience through its commitment to innovation and digital art.

On the collaboration, Enric Palau, Co-founder and Artistic Director of Sónar adds: “The creative universe The Chemical Brothers and Smith & Lyall present for live performances, many of which have been performed at Sónar over the years, is second to none, and Sónar is thrilled to be able to help bring their mould-breaking vision to a whole new audience with this collaboration.”

This artwork features iconic characters and abstract visuals made in reaction to THE CUBE space that play on feelings of tension and release. Inspired by the tradition of ‘Visual Music’, it offers a visceral, synaesthetic experience that allows visitors to feel the transformative and liberating power of music.

Smith & Lyall add: „We are delighted to premiere Music:Response at Casa Batlló because Gaudí illustrates the freedom of expression to which we aspire. Gaudí created fantasy worlds with his buildings, with their own rules and logic. They are immersive environments in which you have the feeling of being outside the normal world, an escape from reality into the sublime. The Chemical Brothers‘ universe shares this same spirit and has also become a self-contained world“.

Smith & Lyall, in conversation at Sónar+D On Friday 14 June, the artists will be discussing their work on Music:Response, and the thrilling visuals created for the Chemical Brothers live show over the years at the SonarAgora stage at Sónar by Day. More information on the talk and the wider Sónar 2024 program can be found here.
