The 3rd edition of Sónar Lisboa brought international electronic music stars and the leading names of the contemporary Portuguese scene together at Parque Eduardo VII in the centre of Lisbon.
Between Friday, March 22 and Sunday, March 24, Sónar Lisboa 2024 presented 54 musical performances at the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes with artists from 16 countries, showcasing the best of Lisbon to the world and bringing trendsetting sounds from around the world to Lisbon.
This year, Sónar Lisboa hosted 19.500 festivalgoers from over 50 countries, including Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany. Over 3 days, Lisbon became a site of pilgrimage for local and international music lovers, further consolidating the festival as an essential date in Sónar’s yearly calendar.
Across the weekend, festival goers were treated to shows and sets by a number of artists set to appear at Sónar 2024 in Barcelona this June: melodic techno master Paul Kalkbrenner with his A/V live show; electro-chanson idol Sevdaliza showcasing some of the AI based experiments that will inform her set as part of the AI & Music program, powered by S+T+ARTS; Marie Davidson’s post-techno poetics; hyperpop-trap mashups fit for the front row from TOMMY CASH; next-gen rave from DJ Gigola, and last but not least a party starting UK and US garage workout from Eliza Rose.
Sónar will return to Lisbon in 2025 to celebrate its 4th edition. The pre-registration for advance ticket sales opens tomorrow.
Over the course of three days, the three stages of Sónar Lisboa welcomed some of the most relevant local artists as well as the biggest international stars of electronic music. Likewise, festivalgoers were treated to some of the biggest shows appearing at Sónar 2024 in Barcelona on the 13th, 14th and 15th of June: Paul Kalkbrenner unleashed the full force of his emotional and euphoric live show. Sevdaliza presented an innovative and captivating new AV show, in which they use AI to question preconceived ideas about gender and identity. TOMMY CASH provoked and entertained in equal parts with his transgressive trap and hyperpop mashups, while Marie Davidson mixed post-punk, analogue techno and machine funk in her new live show. On the DJ side, Sónar Lisboa was treated to nostalgia tinged, forward looking sets by Eliza Rose and DJ Gigola.
Other noteworthy sets and shows include the cult composer Oneohtrix Point Never, the new ‚Club Shy‘ live set by pop icon Shygirl, the rave revisionism of Tiga & Hudson Mohawke with their ‚Love Minus Zero‘ project, and bewitching sets by Wata Igarashi and Perel. Not forgetting the spectacular sets from Bonobo, Helena Hauff b2b IMOGEN, Jennifer Loveless, CC:DISCO!, Nia Archives or the never before seen pairing of 2manydjs with Éclair Fifi & Erol Alkan.
The festival experience itself was upgraded in 2024, with the Sónar by Day programme spread across two outdoors and one indoor stage on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and the Sónar by Night programme taking place entirely indoors at the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes on Friday and Saturday nights. The outdoor areas were also expanded across the park, adding a new food court as well as upgrades to services across the site.
In total, the festival featured artists from 16 countries, a diversity also mirrored on the dance floor, with attendees from 53 countries, including Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, the United States, the Netherlands and Sweden.
Sónar Lisboa has showcased the best of the local scene to the world, bringing together artists who are defining the contemporary sound of the Portuguese capital. Branko, founder of Buraka Som Sistema and head of the Enchufada label, debuted his new album live. Elsewhere the batida beats of Vanyfox, the classic house music of Yen Sung b2b Photonz, the fourth world soundscapes of XEXA and the breakbeat, rave and jungle live set of DJ Lynce coexisted with the psychedelic techno of RUUAR, the percussion of Magupi’n’liquid bass and the powerful vocals of iolanda, this year’s winner of the Festival da Canção.
Once again this year, the spectacular Estufa Fria space has been intervened with the installation ‚LIMBIC LANDMARKS‘ by the Lisbon-based multidisciplinary art collective ZABRA. Open during the three days of the festival, it evoked not only physical geography, but also the emotional landmarks that shape our understanding of the world. Also at Estufa Fria this weekend was Future Days, a series of conferences, workshops and talks on the future of urban lives.
After the Portuguese capital, Sónar will also return to Istanbul and the Zorlu PSM Performing Arts Centre on the 26th, 27th and 28th April, for an eighth consecutive year.
