Sónar presents the worldwide premiere of the new show by Jean-Michel Jarre
A pioneer and a titan of electronic music since his groundbreaking debut album „Oxygene“, the French producer, musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre has chosen Sónar to return to the stage, where he will play for the first time, presenting a new spectacular audio-visual show that will accompany his two new releases.
Following a career spanning over four-decades Jarre has recently released „Electronica 1: The Time Machine“, his first (double) studio album since 2007, on which he has invited and collaborated with fifteen artists with whom he feels he shares a common electronic music DNA. Among those participating are: substantial references including Vince Clarke, John Carpenter, Laurie Anderson and Tangerine Dream with Edgar Froese; prominent and established artists such as Massive Attack’s Robert „3D“ Del Naja, Air and Moby; and more contemporary producers including M83, Boys Noize, Gesaffelstein and Fuck Buttons.
Jarre has already announced his follow-up « Electronica 2 » including collaborations with Jeff Mills, Julia Holter, Gary Numan, The Orb…to name a few.
This year also sees the French artist’s return to the stage, and if his spectacular live shows in the past are anything to go by, his performance at Sónar by Night promises to be an absolutely unique experience.
„For me, Sónar, has become everything a modern festival should aspire to be. From their faultless production on-site to the urban location they utilise so effectively, they’ve been able to establish a reputation on the continent and beyond for hosting some of the most exceptional musical acts and shows from all genres. This is why I chose them to mark my return to the stage and I’m very much looking forward to bringing my new show to the people of Sónar.“ Jean-Michel Jarre.
Today’s electrónica
Sónar 2016 adds several leading cutting edge artists from today’s electronica, art and dance music scenes.
James Blake is on the verge of completing his third album, „Radio Silence”. Given Blake’s incredible talent and the dizzying heights achieved by his two previous albums, the release of his new work is highly anticipated the world over. Not forgetting of course, his new live show; an area in which the London musician feels especially at home, and where his stunning music becomes even more powerful.
Australian producer Flume has experienced considerable international success in recent years. The man behind tracks like „Drop The Game“ and remixes for Arcade Fire and Junior Boys will make his Sónar debut with a concert presenting his highly anticipated second album, „Skin“.
In the realm of hip-hop and r&b, Sonar presents several artists of note: the American of Ethiopian origin Kelela, the new star of futuristic r&b, who will perform live the sensational songs from „Hallucinogen“ and „Cut 4 Me“; the ever reliable and unique sound of Roots Manuva, one of the most important MCs in the history of British hip-hop who will present his new album „Bleeds“; and new UK grime sensation, Stormzy, the young vocalist who in just a short space of time has moved from relative obscurity to lead the charge for London’s new urban sound. A special mention is also reserved for Nozinja, master of the Shangaan electro sound emerging from the suburbs of Soweto, Johannesburg, who will offer a pulsating show at SónarVillage incorporating African polyrhythms and exciting electronic dance, subverting the more traditional sounds of his country.
This year dance friendly techno and club rhythms will be represented by the likes of Boys Noize (presenting their spectacular new show at Sónar by Night), John Talabot (closing Friday night with one of his hypnotic mutated house sets at SónarPub) or Jackmaster (a regular feature in lists of the most popular DJs in the world) or The Martinez Brothers, who will be in charge of closing the SonarClub stage on Friday with their uplifting NY house.
A brand new SónarCar, 100% clubbing
SónarCar has completely redesigned its stage, which will be turned into a 100% clubbing space ready to host two exclusive seven hours sessions, by two extraordinary DJ’s: the legendary Brit Four Tet, and French DJ Laurent Garnier.
The new SónarCar will be in the form of an enclosed, comfortable and intimate space, offering an extraordinary environment to experience the music knowledge and cultural wisdom of these two dj giants, and demonstrates Sónar’s commitment to providing an alternative way to enjoy and understand a dj set.
The 20th anniversary of raster-noton at Sónar
Carsten Nicolai, Olaf Bender and Frank Brettschneider created the raster-noton label in 1996, described by its founders as a platform where pop, art and science converge, and whose influence has been crucial in the evolution of techno and experimental electronica in Europe. raster noton is celebrating its 20th anniversary at Sónar, cementing their relationship with the festival, which has developed over time. There will be performances by three label mainstays: Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolai solo), Byetone (the solo project by Olaf Bender) and Cyclo (Carsten Nicolai + Ryoji Ikeda), all outstanding representatives of exacting electronica with a minimalist aesthetic.
New talent from around the world
True to its goal of tracking the most interesting current trends and detecting global talent shaping the future of electronic music, Sónar adds to its line-up several of today’s most promising artists: the young and talented David August will perform with his new live band; electronic pop from Bob Moses (from Canada) and duo Howling (formed by an Australian singer and an experimental German producer); the perfectionist Irish DJ Mano Le Tough, one of the most sought after DJ’s on the international circuit; from Israel, Red Axes, the remarkable new masters of multiform house music; the fledgling drum’n’bass trio Ivy Lab; and from London, TroyBoi, new signing to Diplo’s Mad Decent label, and touted to be one of the global stars of 2016
Red Bull Music Academy at SónarDôme
For the 12th consecutive year, Red Bull Music Academy, the world’s most important musical touring platform, will curate music for the SónarDôme stage at Sónar by Day.
This year the program will be led by four artists whose work is of the highest calibre: the exceptional London vocalist Jamie Woon; the vibrant, hedonistic French techno group Club Cheval; the live analogue techno project Magic Mountain High (which unites Israelis Juju & Jordash with Germany’s Move D); and German house duo Tuff City Kids, formed by Gerd Janson and Philip Lauer. They will be joined by some of the most interesting participants from their recent events; all producers, very young musicians and newcomers to Sónar: Malard, Kasper Marott, Lemonick, Silkersoft, HomeSick, Sapphire Slows, Hiele and Toxe, to which more names will be added in the coming weeks.
This year’s top tech shows
The SónarComplex stage at Sónar by Day includes two shows perfectly suited to Sónar+D, for their innovative artistic and technological content: „Field“ by Martin Messier, based on the creation of sounds from electromagnetic fields usually imperceptible to the human auditory and visual senses; and „Soft Revolvers“ by Myriam Bleau, where the Canadian artist manipulates four transparent acrylic disks emitting light and sounds as if it were an illuminated vinyl dj set.
