OFF FESTIVAL KATOWICE 2022: NEW ARTISTS ANNOUNCEMENTS

Along with the latest batch artist announcements, OFF Festival decided to launch a special pool of OFF Festival Katowice tickets from March 2–8. They will donate all proceeds from these sales to Ukraine relief efforts.

The money will help fund the collection organized by Fundacja in Corpore, which, in partnership with our hosts, the City of Katowice, has been working hard since last week to provide aid to people impacted by this unthinkable tragedy. We wish to thank our partner eBilet Polska Sp. z o.o. for agreeing to waive their processing fee for the sale of this pool of tickets.

Read on for our latest batch of OFF announcements.

Central Cee (Perlage Stage, August 7)

This London-based rapper launched himself right into second place on the UK’s album charts with his debut mixtape Wild West. Ecstatic critics hailed the birth of the new king of British drill. Central Cee has just followed through with his sophomore effort 23, featuring the hit “Obsessed With You.”

$NOT (Perlage Stage, August 6)

The 24-year-old Florida rapper $NOT wears his hoodie tightly drawn over his face, but his creative horizons are anything but restricted. He also raps likes he just doesn’t care: like he just stumbled into being one of the hottest new rappers in America. From his beginnings on SoundCloud in 2016, $NOT graduated to racking up views on YouTube and TikTok, before busting down all the doors when his track “Billy Boy” was featured on the TV drama Euphoria. It’s no surprise that the artist’s freshly released third LP Ethereal features guest appearances by the likes of A$AP Rocky and Juicy J.

DIIV (Perlage Stage, August 5)

Good guitar rock is always welcome at the OFF Festival. This time it’s coming from DIIV, a NYC-based quartet that builds on the best traditions of shoegaze. The band went on hiatus for a few years while frontman Zachary Cole Smith focused on his health and personal life. The experience appears to have left a trace in DIIV’s art: in 2019 they returned with their third record, Deceiver, their best and darkest LP to date.

ROMY

Romy Madley Croft is a woman of many faces. We first encountered her as the excellent guitarist and singer of the alternative trio The xx, and soon discovered her knack for pop, demonstrated in her hit compositions for such artists as Dua Lipa. Croft has been working on a solo debut since 2020, and the first singles — “Lifetime” and “Lights Out” — promise an album that’s both upbeat and spiritual.

Prospa

Just as the UK’s more pessimistic partygoers were coming to grips with the idea that dance parties were a thing of the past, Prospy dropped the single “Want Need Love.” Crank this track up to eleven and watch as raves break out spontaneously within a one-mile radius. This Leeds duo (Gosha Smith and Harvey Blumler) burst onto the scene in 2018 with the single “Prayer” and has continued to control the party — to quote another of their hits — ever since. If you’re coming to OFF to dance, this might be the highlight of the festival.

Arooj Aftab

Born and raised in Punjab, Arooj Aftab lives and works in the United States, where she graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music. She’s a brilliant singer and a phenomenal composer with an original style that combines minimalism in the vein of Terry Riley with jazz ballads and the musical traditions of her homeland. If her mournful third album Vulture Prince doesn’t move you to tears, then (we’re sorry to say this) your heart is probably made of stone.

Ela Minus

Her best-known track is titled “megapunk,” and “mega-” is the perfect prefix. It’s punk in spirit (hailing from the LP Acts of Rebellion) more than in sound: this is the kind of rebellion that makes you want to dance, or even whisper instead of shouting, if you’re so inclined. The Colombian-born, Brooklyn-raised artist makes cold-wave disco tunes that work equally well in your headphones, alone in your room with the lights out, and onstage at a festival.

Lex Amor

The north London rapper, producer, and DJ Lex Amor marches to the beat of her own drum, and if her 2020 full-length debut Government Tropicana is any indication, she’s going to march pretty far. There’s nothing edgy or aggressive about her style, which veers more toward introspective narratives and an intimate, dreamlike flow. It’s so good that you don’t know whether to focus on her brilliant lyrics or the feeling of her music. The only solution is to replay it again and again…

Duchy

The dream-pop act Duchy (Spirits) was conjured by vocalist and songwriter Joanna Komorowska with producer and composer Michał Szturomski (Afro Kolektyw, Sowy Polski, Nerwowe Wakacje). They debuted in 2021 with the EP Nocą widać lepiej, allegedly inspired by the work of David Lynch. True enough, their sound contains echoes of the uncanny and the surreal, in limbo between wakefulness and sleep.

OFF Festival Katowice 2022 will also feature the previously announced artists Iggy Pop (Perlage Stage, August 6), Metronomy (Perlage Stage, August 7), Rina Sawayama, Bikini Kill, Pi’erre Bourne, Yves Tumor & Its Band, Altın Gün, Molchat Doma, Dry Cleaning, Q, DJ Seinfeld presents Mirrors: Live, Erika de Casier, Natalie Bergman, Yard Act, Mdou Moctar, The Armed and Squid.

The festival is hosted by the City of Katowice, with Perlage as the Main Sponsor.

OFF Festival Katowice 2022 will take place August 5–7 at its regular venue, Three Pond Valley. Three-day passes are now available at the OFF Shop for 399 PLN or 499 PLN with camping spot. One-day tickets are also on sale for 229 PLN. 2020 and 2021 passes will be honored.

The Independent Foundation, the organizer of the OFF Festival, is launching a special pool of tickets for sale March 2–8.

The entire proceeds from sales in this period (or while supplies last) will be go to Ukraine relief efforts organized by Fundacja In Corpore, which, in partnership with our hosts, the City of Katowice, has been working hard since last week to provide aid to people impacted by this unthinkable tragedy. We wish to thank our partner eBilet Polska Sp. z o.o. for agreeing to waive their processing fee for the sale of this pool of tickets.

We have one request: If you choose to buy a ticket or pass from this special pool, please don’t return it. The money will be going to a good cause. We have a lot of faith in people, and we’re counting on your good will in these trying times.
