SECOND WAVE OF ACTS FOR POHODA FESTIVAL 2017

Super group featuring the best freestyle artists, Beardyman’s Dream Team, project of Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, Beak>, and hardcore hip-hop punks, Ho99o9, are the latest confirmed acts for Pohoda 2017. On Monday, we published the aftermovie of the twentieth edition of our festival.

Super group of the best freestylers in the world – Beardyman’s Dream Team

Three-times UK DMC champion, JFB, one of the best drummers in the world, Emre Ramazanoglu (Sia, Noel Gallagher, Alex Clare), world beatbox champion, Bellatrix, violinist and saxophonist, Ben Sarfas, UK Slam Poetry champion, Dizraeli, and one of the best MCs in the world, MC LeeN, have joined forces with a beatbox virtuoso, Beardyman, to create a freestyle super group and you will get a chance to see their incredible performance at Pohoda 2017.

In his performances, Beardyman, born Darren Foreman, mixes beatbox, stand-up comedy and loop show. Genre-wise, his music is influenced by drum and bass, dubstep, breakbeat, trance, techno, hip-hop, but there are other influences that define his work, for example reggae or classical music. Beardyman’s music is created by his voice alone. With the use of electronic equipment, he creates a spectrum of known as well as unknown sounds. He has released two albums to date: I Done A Album (2011) and Distractions (2013). He’s got his own show One Album Per Hour based on audiences’ suggestions chosen by a guest “producer”. Beardyman teamed up with Google and created the world’s first live broadcast interactive jam between him and Jack Black. The cooperation allowed him to record in multiple locations in real time. Beardyman is also a top-class inventor. He built the Beardytron 5000, a customized setup of tools that he constantly upgrades, because none of the existing machines was capable of producing what he had in his head. He introduced the public to Beardytron and its functionalities at his TED talk in 2013.

Pohoda festival-goers had a chance to see Beardyman’s talent two years back at Pohoda 2015. After his show, he told for Refresher that the most important skill in live shows is the ability to get over failures: “When you focus on perfection, whether it’s in the future, present or the past, you shut yourself off and nothing comes out of you.” Despite that, his freestyle is very close to perfect. This is particularly true for his latest project, Beardyman’s Dream Team. What a super group consisting of the best freestyle artists in the world is capable of live, that’s something you’ll get to see at the beginning of July 2017 at Trenčín Airfield.

BEAK> project of Portishead´s Geoff Barrow

Electronic band BEAK> was founded in 2009 by producer Geoff Barrow (Portishead), bassist Billy Fuller (Robert Plant), and Matt Williams, who was recently replaced by musician Will Young. This year, they recorded the soundtrack to the film Couple in a Hole, they performed at festivals such as Glastonbury and Primavera, and next summer they will play also at Pohoda 2017.

BEAK> released the eponymous album in November 2009. They recorded the music for the album over 12 days in one room and did not perform any further modifications. In the summer of 2012, they released their second album called “>>”. Stuart Berman of Pitchfork wrote that it relieves the endless waiting for the next album of Portishead, as “krautrock” Beak> is steadily moving forward.  Having mentioned Portishead, this is what Geoff Barrow said about our festival after their concert at Pohoda 2011: “This is by far the best festival we’ve ever been to. Its line-up, ethos, people who organize it, non-profit organization, food, everything. I had two big mackerels this afternoon – they were fantastic. I walked around the whole site several times. I saw fantastic Cello Colloseum, classical music on main stage, sunflowers. It’s beautiful. No bullshit. This is the best festival”. „Geoff, it was our honour. We can´t wait to hear your opinion of next year´s Pohoda, and we began looking for a mackerel stall“,  added Michal Kaščák.

Ho99o9

Daily Denník N ranked them among the aces of Pohoda 2015. Milk chief Martin Jenča produced his own “directors cut” spot for their song. Great response to their performance confirms that Ho99o9 overcame all expectations. That is why we decided to make an exception and Ho99o9 will perform also at Pohoda 2017.

TheOGM and Eaddy started performing already in 2012 within JerseyKLAN collective. Their main influences were the so-called gangsta hip-hop and Brooklyn’s underground punk shows. In 2014, they relocated to Los Angeles and started performing under the name Ho99o9. In August that year, they played at New York’s Afropunk Festival. Rolling Stone named them one of “10 New Artists You Need to Know” and described their 30-minute slot as a high-octane show. The Guardian says they “are hip-hop for people who don’t normally listen to much hip-hop.” They’re designed more for an audience listening to hard-rock, punk, metal and similar genres. The Guardian recommended their London concerts in “New band of the week” selection. If you missed the great concert of band Ho99o9 at Pohoda 2016, you will have another chance to see them in early July 2017.
