DEKMANTEL FESTIVAL 2019: SEVEN SUMMERS STRONG

What were your cherished memories of Dekmantel Festival 2018? Sweat dripping down the back wall of the UFO II as overhead striplights raced blue and green? DJs hopping into the audience under the Selectors willows to dance to their own records? New life breathed into Bronski Beat, Bushwacka and “Basscadet” over at the main stage? Another techno supergroup peering over a tangle of wires in the UFO? Sprinting between the opening concerts to hear adventurous live music from Zambia, Japan, China and the Congo fill the city air (surely the sweetest noise pollution a city can offer)? Cycling home through the forest, thinking about how you can’t wait to do it all again? Yeah: us too.

2019 marks the 7th edition of our summer centrepiece, and the options available have never felt more exciting. This ‘choose your own adventure’ programming is no accident. We love music of all stripes, so why not put the broadest possible array on display for those who travel from around the world to the Amsterdamse Bos? The cast changes year by year, but our guiding mission objective does not. Whether you’re searching for EBM or jazz fusion, you’ll find only the best on offer. Plus, of course, music lovers as eager and receptive as you are to share the experience with – whichever experience it is that you decide upon. Welcome back!

From mid-afternoon on Wednesday until breakfast time the following Monday, we will play host to well over 100 performances. The music will span all four corners of the map, in locations ranging from sun-dappled canopies of the Selectors stage and striplight-adorned shed that is the UFO II on site at the main festival, to numerous cherished concert halls either side of the IJ river that cleaves north and south of Amsterdam in the pre-program. Amongst the most eye-catching artists to feature are drone metal demigods Sunn O))), five-time Grammy-nominated composer Suzanne Ciani, Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke, electro futurecasters Cybotron, peerless techno stargazer Jeff Mills, EBM icons Nitzer Ebb, pop fantasist Róisín Murphy, a midweek concert from free jazz figurehead Pharaoh Sanders and his Quartet plus, at the time of writing, the first ever appearance on European soil for mythical Japanese producer Shinichi Atobe.

The line-up includes singular solo artists like Yves Tumor, dark-hearted rave miscreants The Empire Line and Vatican Shadow, celebrated jazz trio The Comet Is Coming, Milanese afterhours specialist Paquita Gordon, experimental Swedish outfit SHXCXCHCXSH, digital-dancehall duo Equiknoxx, Kenyan envoy Slikback and many more. Plus, prominent faces from previous editions of the festival return. Amongst the stalwarts are Dekmantel Selectors compilers Motor City Drum Ensemble and Marcel Dettmann, UK pride-and-joys Ben UFO and Blawan, and party-starting people’s champions, Carista and Palms Trax.

All artists are scheduled across the familiar stages on the festival site. An overview of the line-up can be found on the artist-page of our website. The program was revealed through our Instagram account: www.instagram.com/dkmntl
